29, 2000 GEORGETOWN, Guyana, APR 28 (AP) - Half centuries by Yousuf Youhana and Mohammed Wasim lifted Pakistan to a superior position against the West Indies Under-23s on the opening day of their four-day, first-class cricket match at the Uitvlugt Community Center on Thursday.
Youhana hit an unbeaten 73 and Mohammed 59 as Pakistan, choosing to bat, reached 261 for six when play ended five minutes early because of rain.
Youhana has so far batted for just over four hours, faced 181 balls and hit eight fours and has shared an unbroken 68 for the seventh wicket with captain Mushtaq Ahmed, whose 38 not out off 52 balls contains four fours and one six.
Earlier, Mohammed featured in a second-wicket stand of 96 with Wajahatullah Wasti which endured lunch when the Pakistanis were 85 for one. They had lost Younis Khan lbw to Kerry Jeremy for three in the first hour.
In a productive post-lunch session, Pakistan lost Wajahatullah; Mohammed, whose innings lasted 2 3/4 hours, in which time he faced 116 balls and struck ten fours; and Shahid Afridi to decline from 102 for one to 136 for four.
When leg-spin bowler Camilus Alexander gained leg before wicket verdicts against Imran Nazir and Saqlain Mushtaq, Pakistan shakily placed at 193 for six, but Yousuf and Mushtaq revived them with some enterprising batting.
