Dhaka, Apr 4 (UNB)- Abahani Limited maintained their winning run in the Janakantha Premier Division Cricket League earning a massive 8-wicket victory over Brothers Union Club at the Bangabandhu National Stadium today (Tuesday). The day’s defeat, fourth in the league from eight matches, forced Brothers Union Club to almost slip the title race while this was Abahani’s eighth win from same number of outings. A brilliant innings of Sri Lankan Samarasekara, who batted at number three, went in vain when Brothers Union Club lost their seven wickets within 53 runs. Three Pakistani bowlers helped Dhanmondi outfit to bundle out the opposition innings for 143 runs in 39.4 overs. Mohammed Hossain and Amir Wasim shared six wickets while Waqas Ahmed took two wickets. Spinner Mohammed Hossain picked up three for 20 runs and slow medium pacer Wasim claimed three conceding 29 runs in 10 overs. New ball bowler Waqas took two wickets for 29 runs in 10 overs. Veteran pacer Iqbal Hossain made the first breakthrough for his side taking Shahriar Hossain Bidyut wicket with Brothers Union scoreboard reading only 4 runs. Ehsanul Haq and Samarasekara repaired the early damage associating 40 runs in the second wicket stand where most of the runs came from the Sri Lankan willow. Samarasekara made another 46-run partnership with Sanwar Hossain who added 16 runs off 21 balls with a boundary but after the dismissal of this partnership, Brother Union lost their wickets like ninepins. One down Sri Lankan dashing batsman Samarasekar hammered 70 runs off 49 balls with nine hits to the fence and two over the fence before being clean bowled by Amir Wasim. In reply, Abahani Limited easily reached the target making 146 runs for two wickets in 25.4 overs riding on a huge 111-run second wicket partnership between Azm Iqbal and Naimur Rahman Durjoy. Opener Azam Iqbal made an unbeaten 54 runs off 73 balls that featured nine boundaries while Durjoy contributed 55 runs off 65 balls. Pakistani spinner Shahed Mahmud took the only wicket of Durjoy trapping leg before wicket while Mehrab Hossain Opee returned to the pavilion falling victim of runout making 12 runs of 14 balls.
