Khan, Akram century lifts Pakistan over West Indies Under-23s |

May 1, 2000 GEORGETOWN, Guyana, APR 30 (AP) - An unbeaten century by Younis Khan and a five-wicket haul by Mohammad Akram lifted Pakistan to a strong position over the West Indies Under-23s on the third day of their four-day, first-class cricket match on Saturday. Khan pummeled five sixes and nine fours in an unbeaten 103 as Pakistan declared their second innings at 172 for four after Akram captured five for 16 to help dismiss the Under-23s for 143 in their first innings. It gave the Pakistanis a first-innings lead of 156. The Under-23s were 12 for the loss of captain Daren Ganga, who was leg before wicket for four to complete a memorable day for Akram. Khan was 55 when Pakistan reached 79 for one at tea and raced to his century in just under three hours by smashing his 133rd delivery from leg-spin bowler Camilus Alexander over mid-wicket for his fifth six. Looking for quick runs to hasten the declaration, Younis lost Mohammad Wasim (25) with whom he added 84 for the second wicket, Yousuf Youhana (11) and Shahid Afridi (25) with whom he shared 52 for the fourth-wicket in the evening period. Earlier, the Under-23s, overnight 119 for four, lost their last six wickets for a mere 24 runs after started 1 1/4 hours late because overnight rain left some wet spots on the outfield. Akram removed Marlon Samuels (2), Wayne Phillip (8) and Alexander (0) while conceding just one run as the young West Indians slumped to 135 for seven at lunch. After lunch, he completed his rout when Pedro Collins was leg before wicket for no ught.
