May 18, 2000 Dhaka,
May 17 (UNB) - Bangladesh overcame a typeset hurdle to enter the elite
club of test playing nations as it secured Australian support for its plea
for Test Status in next month’s ICC meeting in London. Bangladesh
Cricket Board President Saber Hossain Chowdhury disclosed the delightful
news at BCB office today after his return from “successful trips” to
Australia and New Zealand. “Strategically, it’s a very important
success,” he told newsmen. “The
ACB decision to support our application for full membership is a huge
boost and wonderful news for the people of Bangladesh and our cricket,”
he said. ACB
Chairman Denis Rogers said in Melbourne that Bangladesh had clearly earned
the right to become a full member of ICC. “Bangladesh
has earned the right to become the tenth test match playing nation and the
Australian Cricket Board will be pleased to support its application for
full membership of the ICC and to assist in further development of the
game in Bangladesh”, said Rogers. A
beaming Saber said this is a great achievement for Bangladesh because
Australia is now in a leading position in the world cricket on the field
and out of the filed. Australia
disapproved of Bangladesh’s plea for Test Status in the last ICC meeting
along with New Zealand, England and South Africa while Pakistan, India,
Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe supported it. Bangladesh
needs the support of seven test playing countries, out of nine, to earn
the status. In the last ICC meeting, Bangladesh, proposed by Pakistan, got
five votes. |
