Dhaka,
May 26 (UNB) - Bangladesh
for the first time have set its target to come out on the field to play
for win with best fielding side in the 7th Pepsi Asia Cup
Cricket. Bangladesh
captain Aminul Islam Bulbul and coach Sarwar Imran expressed their
confidence that they would prove in the tournament that Bangladesh cricket
is coming up. The
two were talking to newsmen at Hotel Sheraton this (Friday) afternoon.
Host team manager Afzalur Rahman Sinha was also present at the briefing. Bangladesh,
who made a big upset in the last World Cup in England beating giant
Pakistan, will take on defending champions Sri Lanka in the opening Asia
Cup match on Sunday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium. “I
want at least one win,” said Imran, replying to a question about his
ambition in the tournament as his first national assignment. Bangladesh
skipper also echoed the coach. Bulbul said: “We will play every match
for win… we are now experienced playing lots of international
matches.” Th
right-handed batsman, who played in first Asia Cup for Bangladesh in 1986,
said Bangladesh fielding side is the best, specially in the inner circle
among the teams of the subcontinent. Bulbul
gave high credit to his three fielders — Javed Omar Belim Gulla,
Shahriar Hossain Bidyut and Naimur Rahman Durjoy - as the best in the
region. He
said that in the past, they used to take the field to play positive
cricket that earned respectable results. “But this time we’ll go out
on the field to win.” The
experienced campaigner added that they feel “we can win in our own
ground” because Bangladesh earned three victories in the One-day cricket
since appearing in the international cricket in 1996 on foreign soil. Bangladesh
captain and coach both admitted that they have no genuine fast bowlers in
the squad. Coach Imran said: “I worked hard with my pacers but the
improvement is not satisfactory.” About
the surprise inclusion of five pacers in the squad despite a spin-favoured
pitch, captain Bulbul said it would not be a problem as “we need bowling
with proper line and length.” Slow
medium pacer Khaled Mahmud Sujon is an ideal bowler for this kind of
pitch, he said. About
his own form, skipper of the host team said: “I’ve a technical
problem, but now I overcame it under the supervision of the coach.
Inshallah, I’ll prove my worth in the tournament”. Imran
said: “I went to the residential camp (at Savar BKSP) for fielding
practice, but failed to carry it out due to wet ground condition.” He,
however, said their preparation was not unsatisfactory. “The recently
concluded premier league provided enough opportunity for match
practice.” “I
believe every player is confident to play better in the tournament despite
a short-time preparation,” said Imran, who coached league champions
Abahani Limited this season. He
added: “I think some individual player in the present squad lacked
adequate skill. But it was not possible to change at short time
available.”
