May 29 (UNB) – Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today inaugurated the
much-expected Asia Cup Cricket at Bangabandhu National Stadium here today
as the sporting extravaganza got off to a formal start one day behind the
schedule. “I
hereby announce the Pepsi 7th Asia Cup Cricket opened,” a
smiling Hasina said amidst claps and cheers from the spectators at the big
bowl. Later
the Prime Minister released a white pigeon, symbol of peace, and a festoon
inscribed with words mentioning the tournament along with balloons. In
the brief opening ceremony, Sheikh Hasina also walked past the players of
hosts Bangladesh and current champions Sri Lanka shaking hands. The two
teams clashed in the opening encounters of the prestigious tourney. The
two captains--Aminul Islam Bulbul and Sanath Jaysuriya-- accompanied
Sheikh Hasina during the inspection. State
Minister for Youth and Sports Obaidul Qader and Deputy Minister for Local
Government Saber Hossain Chowdhury, also President of Bangladesh Cricket
Board, were present. |
