SYDNEY, MAY 30 (AP) - An Asian-based media conglomerate is reported to be preparing a breakaway cricket competition involving teams mostly from the Asian subcontinent, the Sydney Morning Herald said Tuesday.
With the game racked by a match-fixing scandal, the Herald reported the organization was ready to exploit the situation and set up the competition on similar lines to Australian businessman Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket in 1977.
The Herald speculated that India's Zee TV would offer highly lucrative offers to players mostly from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
While details were sketchy, the newspaper quoted an unnamed Australian player saying: "I've heard some whispers along those lines. Something is going on but I don't know all the details."
The newspaper said sources in India and Australia said one of the three television companies still competing for the rights to the 2003 and 2007 World Cups was testing the waters to see if it could conduct a rebel competition if it misses the contract.
