LONDON, JUNE 11 (AP) - Offspinner Robert Croft and allrounder Mark Ealham Sunday were named in a 14-man squad for the first cricket test against the West Indies starting in Edgbaston on Thursday.
Ealham, hasn't play for England in a test since appearing against South Africa at Lord's in 1998. Croft, played the last of his 15 tests against Australia in Brisbane 18 months ago. But both players have been an integral part of England's one-day team for the past three years. Croft, bowled outstandingly for Glamorgan against the tourists last week and his inclusion was mainly to exploit a possible six lefthanders in West Indies' batting order.
"Mark Ealham can provide more variation to our bowling attack as a swing bowler, but our final choice of lineup will depend on our assessment of the pitch and the weather condition," said chairman of selectors David Graveney.
"We've chosen 14 players for this Test match because we want to consider all the options available to us," added Graveney. "Robert Croft comes into the equation because we may need an offspinner against a side with six left-handed batsmen in their top eight.
"Robert has been chosen not just because of his performance against the West Indies in last week's tour match, but also because he has bowled well for Glamorgan this summer and rediscovered the attributes that served him well when he first played test cricket for England."
England 14 for the first test:
Nasser Hussain (captain), Michael Atherton, Mark Ramprakash,Graeme Hick, Alec Stewart, Nick Knight, Andrew Flintoff, Chris Schofield, Andrew Caddick, Robert Croft, Darren Gough, Ed Giddins,Steve Harmison and Mark Ealham.
