Dhaka (UNB)- Bangladesh conceded a narrow one-wicket defeat against mighty Pakistan in the opening match of the Asian Cricket Council Under-17 Tournament in Karachi yesterday (Saturday).

Shafiul Alam of Bangladesh displayed an all round performance in the tourney opener and was adjudged man of the match, according to a message receiving here this (Saturday) evening.

In the day’s crucial match, the Pakistan colts were in trouble when they lost their 9th wicket at 167 runs in 44.2 overs, still needing two runs from remaining four ball in a 45-over affair.

Earlier, sent into bat first, Bangladesh made a good start scoring 91 runs for the loss of three wickets in 22.2 overs in a comparatively low scoring match with skipper Nafees Iqbal hitting 63 off 112 balls.

At one stage, Bangladesh made 160 runs for five in 40.2 overs but the fell into trouble when the last five batsmen went back to the dressing room very cheaply adding only eight runs.

Four lower order batsmen—-Manzurul Islam, Shoeb Islam, Anowar Hossain and Mohammad Sharif –returned to the pavilion with duck amid frustration of the test babes Bangladesh.

Shariful Islam with 35 runs off 60 deliveries, promising opener Mohammad Ashraful with 13 off 28 balls and Kuntal Chandan with 11 in 22 balls were the other notable Bangladeshi batsmen.

Muneer Ansari of Pakistan bowled devastatingly to claim five wickets conceding 26 runs in 8.3 overs with a maiden while Suleman Quadir took one for 33 runs in his nine-over spell.

For Pakistan, opener S Butt, middle order Kasif Ejaz and Suleman Quadir hit 35 runs each, and Faisal Khan scored 26 runs.

Shariful Islam and Mohammad Sharif took one wicket each giving away 20 and 32 runs respectively excepting man of the match Shafiul’s four-wicket haul.

Bangladesh will play Nepal in their second match on Wednesday (July 19) at the Asgar Ali Shah Stadium in the port of Karachi.
