GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) – A six-wicket haul by Sri Lanka's famed offspinner Muthiah Muralitharan devastated South Africa's first innings for 238 runs, forcing the visitors to follow on in the first

cricket test.

At stumps on the third day, South Africa was 112 for two wickets in its second innings - trailing by 172 runs with eight second innings wickets in hand.

Resuming at the overnight score of 81 for two wickets in reply to Sri Lanka's mammoth first innings score of 522 runs, the visitors were bowled out for 238 runs despite a century by Daryll Cullinan.

Muralitharan claimed six wickets for 87 runs off 41 overs.

Cullinan's knock of 114 was the only silver lining in the South African batting. He slammed one six and 12 fours.

Spin wizard Muralitharan struck early after Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya opened the day with a mixed attack of pace and spin. Chaminda Vaas bowled from the other end.

With the pitch breaking up, Muralitharan struck in his fourth over as Jacques Kallis, overnight 28 not out, stretched forward to defend a delivery wide outside the off stump.

The ball turned sharply and Kallis edged it Russel Arnold at silly point. Kallis scored 30 runs.

Jonty Rhodes began briskly, but made the mistake of going back to play Muralitharan. The ball turned and crashed into the stumps.

Lance Klusener came in at number six and was beaten repeatedly by Muralitharan. But it was Upul Chandana who claimed Klusener's wicket after he had scored 19 runs.

Mark Boucher was the next man in, but he was bowled for a duck. Upul Chandana then removed Paul Adams and Makhaya Ntini to wrap up the South African innings.

South Africa started its second innings cautiously. But Neil McKenzie fell to Chandana after he had scored 25 off 68 balls. South Africa lost the second wicket in the last over of the day when Gary Kristen was run out.
