Dhaka(UNB)- Test babes Bangladesh were bowed out of the ICC Asia Cup Under-17 Cricket tournament after suffering a 44–run defeat against Sri Lanka in the first semifinal at the National Stadium in Karachi yesterday (Saturday).

The dream of Bangladesh to reach the final of the 10-nation fray was shattered yesterday as they were forced to play the semifinal a day ahead of the schedule after playing three group matches against Nepal, Bahrain and Kuwait without any break.

Former world champions Sri Lanka will play final on Tuesday against the winners of host Pakistan and Gulf nation UAE, who will meet in the second semifinal today (Sunday).

Opting to bat first in the day’s match, Sri Lanka piled-up comfortable 214 runs for seven wickets in stipulated 45 overs with Jeewan Mendis contributing 42 runs off 41 balls featuring four boundaries.

Opener Ishan Mutalip made an expensive 36 runs off 82 balls including four boundaries while another opener Harish Ratnayake scored 32 runs in 60 balls with two hit to the fence.

Number seven bat D Ranawake hammered 28 runs off 21 balls with three fours and one down Eshan Abeysinghe scored run-a-ball 25 with a four and a six. D Niroshan quickfired 19 off just 10 balls with a hit across the rope and one over the rope.

Bangladesh’s new ball bowler Shariful Islam captured two wickets conceding 35 runs in eight overs, Manjurul Islam claimed two for 42 in nine overs while Ali Arman and Shafiul Alam took apiece giving away 31 and 36 runs.

In reply, Bangladesh faced an early batting collapse losing two wickets for 20 runs in 3.3 overs including skipper Nafees Iqbal, who went back to pavilion scoring only two runs.

Upcoming opener Mohammad Ashraful, who hit a century against Nepal, contributed a patient 48 runs off 88 balls with a boundary to carry the team total to a respectable 113 runs for four in 28.4 overs before he was caught and bowled by Jehan Jatasuriya, the lankan hero of the day.

Two down Nasiruddin Faruk hammered 30 runs in 55 deliveries with four hits to the fence, number six bat Shariful Islam made 30 runs off 43 balls, Kuntal Chandra 18 in 22 and Manjurul 13 off 16 deliveries.

Jehan Jatasuriya was the most successful Lankan bowler in the match to claim three wickets for 33 runs.
