GALLE, Sri Lanka (AP) - Sri Lankan spin wizard Muthiah Muralitharan crushed South Africa to an innings defeat Sunday, registering its first test victory over South Africa.

It was South Africa's third humiliating innings defeat since its return to international cricket eight years ago.

Muralitharan claimed seven South African second innings wickets to add to his first innings haul of six wickets. His match figure

read 13 wickets for 171 runs off 76 overs.

Murtalitharan was chosen Man of the Match. "The main thing was we had 522 runs and it is very easy to bowl when the pressure is on batsmen," Muralitharan said as he accepted the award.

South Africa resumed its second innings on 112 for two, needing 172 runs to avoid an innings defeat. But it lost five wickets in the pre-lunch session, with Muralitharan claiming four of the wickets.

The other wicket was taken by spinner Upul Chandana. The Sri Lankans, however, had to wait until the 10th over for the morning's first wicket.

Jacques Kallis, on 40, tried to sweep a Chandana delivery but succeeded only in getting a top edge and was caught by Muralitharan at short fine leg.

In the next over disaster struck South Africa. Darryl Cullinan came forward and popped up a bat pad catch that was brilliantly

caught by a diving Russel Arnold.

Lance Klusener was caught behind in the 15th over, trying to cut. Immediately after the drinks interval, Mark Boucher on seven padded up to Muralitharan and was adjudged leg before by Umpire Darryl Harper of Australia.

Skipper Shaun Pollock was caught by Arnold off Muralitharan on 12.

The South Africans went to lunch still needing 55 runs to avoid an innings defeat with three second innings wickets in hand.

At lunch, Jonty Rhode was batting on 40 and Nicky Boje on 17. Boje was out after lunch given leg before by Sri Lankan umpire

P.T. Manuel when a delivery from Muralitharan struck his pad. Boje faced 65 balls for his 35 with four boundaries.

Paul Adams joined Rhodes, but could not read a delivery from Muralitharan which slipped past his bat and pad.
