KANDY, Sri Lanka (AP) - Lance Klusener hit 118 not out to take South Africa to 253 all out after a disastrous start Sunday, but the first day's play of the second test against Sri Lanka was marked by wrong umpiring.

Sri Lankan captain Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and invited the South Africans to bat.

South African opener Gary Kirsten was rapped on his pads on the third ball by a full length delivery that appeared to go straight to the stumps. Chaminda Vaas appealed, but was turned down by Sri Lankan Umpire Gamini Silva, who was officiating in his first match.

Two balls later Vaas swung a delivery between Kirsten's bat and pad, wicket keeper Kumara Sanagkkara caught the ball and the close-in fielders appealed.

This time, Silva declared him out, apparently caught behind as Kirsten watched in disbelief. But Silva clarified to match referee B.F. Hastings of New Zealand that he had given a leg-before decision.

South Africa's last man, M. Hayward, was bowled from a no-ball from Muthiah Muralitharan, which umpire Silva did not notice.

When Sri Lanka started its first innings, Silva disallowed what looked like a caught behind, which would have sent Jayasuriya back to the pavilion.

Earlier, in the South African innings, Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Zoysa had Neil McKenzie caught at short leg by Mahela Jayawardene off his fifth delivery. South Africa was two for four runs.

Both Zoysa and Vaas extracted movement and bounce from the wicket, enough to justify the decision to bowl first. Vaas was the pick of the two, beating batsmen on numerous occasions.

Sri Lanka's spin wizard, Muralitharan, rapped Jacques Kallis leg before for 16. South Africa was 16 for three wickets. Darryl Cullinan was bowled by the other spinner Kumara Dharmasena for two in the 12th over of the innings.

Jonty Rhodes also fell to Dharmasena after scoring 12. At lunch, Lance Klusener was batting on 29 and Mark Boucher on 9.

After lunch, Klusener and Boucher hit half-centuries to save South Africa from posting a low score. The two put together 124 in their sixth wicket partnership to take the visitors to 191 for eight at tea.

Klusener was harsh on the spinners, hitting both Muralitharan and Upul Chandana and scored 118 and remained not out.

Klusener faced 214 balls, hit 13 boundaries and two sixes for his score.

The partnership between Klusener and Boucher ended when Klusener called non-striker Boucher for a single after playing the ball wide of bowler Muralitharan.

The Sri Lankan spin-king, who is also one of the better fielders, pounced on it in a flash to send a return to wicketkeeper Kumara Sangakkara, leaving Boucher with no chance to get to the other end.

Boucher - who survived a bat-pad chance to Mahela Jayawardene off Muralitharan at 44 - hit eight fours in his knock of 60, which came off 111 balls.

Following Boucher's run-out, leg-spinner Upul Chandana struck in his ninth over when he had Shaun Pollock caught off bat-pad by Jayewardene at silly mid-off for five and trapped Nicky Boje leg before off the next delivery.

Sri Lanka scored 15 for no loss in its innings.
