SYDNEY (AP) - Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie were recalled Wednesday to the Australian cricket squad for next month's limited-overs series against South Africa.
Ponting has recovered from the knee injury which sidelined him during Australia's tours to New Zealand and South Africa last summer. He was selected at the expense of Queensland opener Matt Hayden.
Gillespie has not played for Australia since breaking his right leg and left wrist in an on-field collision with captain Steve Waugh during a match against Sri Lanka last September.
The fast bowler was selected ahead of seamer Damien Fleming, who is sidelined with injury.
Shane Warne was named to the 13-man Australian squad but his position as vice-captain will not be decided until early August.
The leg-spin bowler was caught up in a tabloid newspaper scandal last month after admitting he left lewd messages on the telephone answering machine of a British nurse he'd met in a Leicester nightclub.
Warne, Australia's most prolific test wicket-taker, is spending the Australian off-season playing for Hampshire in the English county competition.
Australia and South Africa will be contesting the first Super Challenge, a three-match series scheduled to be played indoors at Melbourne's Colonial Stadium Aug. 16-20.
Australian team: Michael Bevan, Adam Gilchrist, Jason Gillespie, Ian Harvey, Brett Lee, Shane Lee, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Symonds, Shane Warne, Mark Waugh, Stephen Waugh.
