Dhaka, Aug 18 (UNB) – Holding an ambition to take part in the ‘World Women Cricket Tournament’ of 2003, Bangladesh Cricket Board launched a long-term intensive training course for country’s women cricketers today (Friday).

BCB member and former captain of national cricket team Raquibul Hasan inaugurated the camp at the Dhanmondi Indoor Cricket Stadium this evening. BCB member Ahmed Sazzadul Alam Bobby was also present.

National cricket coach Sayed Altaf Hossain will conduct the three-month course, first ever in its kind, after getting the prestigious test status.

Some courses for women cricketers were held in the country previously under private initiatives.

About 40 trainees of different age groups between 12 and 21 years of age are participating in the course, which will continue from 2pm to 6pm everyday except Thursday.

Of the total trainees, some 15 were imparted training beforehand under the supervision of coach Syed Altaf Hossain and the remaining are freshers.

During the training period, the trainees will take part in different matches and tournaments in the country.

Coach Sayed Altaf Hossain expressed the hope that the number of trainees will increase.

‘Abahani Women Cricket team’ had played for the first time with an Indian women team at Eden garden ground in Calcutta in 1984.

Two other matches were held with visiting Indian Sisters’ Eleven and Bangladesh in Dhaka in 1995.

Bangladesh lost all the three matches to the Indian teams.
