Dhaka
(UNB) - Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday (Tuesday) announced a
14-member national squad for ensuing ICC Knockout Tournament in Kenya as
well as South Africa tour.
The
final squad was chosen from 26-member preliminary selection where
all-rounder Naimur Rahman Durjoy was made new captain and wicket-keeper
Khaled Masud Pilot his deputy.
The
team: Javed Omar Belim, Shahriar Hossain, Habibul Bashar, Akram Khan, Aminul
Islam, Al Shahriar, Naimur Rahman (captain), Khaled Masud (vice-captain),
Enamul Haq Moni, Hasibul Hossain, Munjurul Islam, Mohammed Rafique,
Mushfiqur Rahman and Bikas Ranjan Das. Stand-by:
Rajin Shaleh Alam, Fahim Muntasir, Aminul Islam (Jr) and Mohammed Ashraful. “We’ve
selected a balanced side and gave priority to the opinions of captain and
coaches in the selection process,” Chief selector Tanveer Haider told
newsmen at the BCB office yesterday. In
absence of the glittering opening batsman Mehrab Hossain Opee, the national
team will have only two specialist openers —- Javed Omar Belim Gulla and
Shahriar Hossain Biddyut. Tanveer
Haider, also vice-president of the BCB, said they dropped Opee considering
his future because at this moment he is not hundred percent fit. “We have
eight top-order batsmen and if needed, we’ll choose make-shift opener from
them.”
“Fitness
was one of the most important criteria for selection and we picked up these
players also considering a report by our South African Physio Gavin
Benjafield”, said Tanveer. Replying
to a question, Tanveer Haider said it would be the first International
Tournament for the team after becoming a test-playing nation. “So we
needed those who can face the challenge.” On
a query about the inclusion of two left-arm spinners in the squad, the chief
selector said it would help the team a lot to play in a bouncy wicket during
the tour.
Bangladesh
will play their first match of the ICC Knockout World Cup in Kenya against
England on October 5 and start their South Africa tour on October 12 with a
four-day match against Griqualand West at Kimberly. The
national team will also play three limited-over matches against South Africa
A team on October 18, 21 and 22 at Bloemfontein, Pietermaritzburg and Durban
respectively. The
match at Bloemfontein will be a day-night affair. The team will return home
on October 24. |
