March 7, 2000 Undated,
March 6: Malaga stunned leaders
Deportivo La Coruna in Spain, Borussia Dortmund’s wretched run continued
in Germany while in the French Cup, Paris Saint Germany were shown the
door during action in Europe on Sunday, reports AFP. PRIMERA
LIGA
Madrid:
Deportivo La Coruna, on 49 points, on Sunday saw their lead cut to just
four points as they fell 1-0 at Malaga to a third-minute goal by Dario
Silva. Then
little Alaves, who have never won the Spanish league or Cup in
their79-year history, sneaked into second spot with a 1-0 win at Rayo
Vallecano, thanks to a 70th minute goal by Oscar Tellez. Mighty
Barcelona, Real Zaragoza and Real Madrid, who have all won European Club
competitions within the last five years, trail the club from northern town
Vitoria by a point. Barcelona’s
emphatic second-half display in a 4-0 win over Numancia on Saturday
maintained their hopes of a third consecutive title and gave a stark
warning to their European Champions League rivals. With
world player of the year Rivaldo watching from the stands, Louis vain
Gaal’s side went ahead at the break through a goal from Gabriel Gabri,
But then exploded in the second half with two more from Dani and a late
goal from Luise Figo. Also
on Saturday , Real Madrid could only manage a 1-1 result at Real Oviedo
and Valencia beat Athletic
Bibao 2-0. Bundesliga BERLIN:
Borussia Dortmun’s dismal year 2000 continued here Sunday although a
1-1sraw at Eintracht Frankfurt was not disastrous in comparison to some of
their other results since the turn of the century. Ailing
Dortmund are without a win this year under the regime of Bernd Krauss and
lie 10th in the table – a far cry from the team that in 1997
rejoiced in the titles of European and World Club Champions. Heike
Herrlich gave Dortmund an early lead only for Norwegian striker Jan Age
Frankfurt a share of the spoils with 14 minutes remaining. Former
Middlesbrough striler Fjortoft swooped
after an uncharacteristic blunder
from veteran former German international defender Jorgen KOHLER. SSV
Ulm boosted their fight against relegation with a 2-1 win over German Cup
holders Werder Bremen in Sunday’s other match in a weekend mainly
notable for an unhppy conclusion to the glittering Bundesliga career of Bayern Munich sweeper Lotar Matthaeus the defending
champions slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of ZgB Stuttgart. Matthaeus
has one game left in a Bayern shirt before departing for New York outfit
MetroStars next week-his swam song will be in the Champions League against
Real Madrid. Bayern’s
lead has now been trimmed to two point by Bayer LeverKusen , 3-1
victorious at Kaiserslautern. The
only other team conceivably in with a shout of the title Hamburg SV had to
settle for 4-4 draw at olfsburg after squandering a three-goal lead. French cup PARIS:
Teddy Bertin’s late goal shot Strasbourg into the quarter-finals of the
French Cup here on Sunday following their 1-0 victory over visitors Paris
Saint Germain. PSG,
five-time winners of the competition, were three minutes from extra-time
before Bertin intervened in a hard fought cup tie at the Meinau stadium. Strasbourg
were also drawn against the best quarter-final opponent, at amateur side
Calais on either March 18 or 19. Earlier
on Sunday, runaway league leader Monaco thrashed amateurs Pontivy
4-0 to earn a last eight trip to Lyon. The other matches pot
division one champions Bordeaux against Second Division Nantes at home to
Rennes. Pontivy,
who reached the last 16 of the French Cup for the first time in their
history, were hardly expected to beat Monaco, who admittedly fielded a
weakened side. Goals
from Dodo Prso, Wagneau Eloi, plus two late strikes from Norwegian
international John Riise earned the win for the principality team. Source
