14, 2000 LAWRENCE, Kansas, APR 13 (UNB/AP) - Dion Rayford, the former Kansas football player accused of damaging the drive-through window at a Taco Bell, has pleaded guilty to criminal property damage. The 1.9-meter (6-foot-3), 117-kilo (260-pound) defensive end was sentenced to one year of probation on Wednesday. Douglas County District Judge Paula Martin also ordered Rayford to pay court costs and restitution for damage to the drive-through window. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors dropped charges of disorderly conduct and having an open container of alcohol. Restaurant employees said Rayford tried to crawl through the window Nov. 17 because he thought servers failed to include a chalupa in his takeout order. The widely publicized incident resulted in Rayford's suspension for the final game of the season. Rayford, 25, Los Gatos, California, transferred to Kansas before the 1998 season from West Valley Junior College in Saratoga, California. He started 10 of 11 games in 1998 and all but the season finale against Iowa State last season. Rayford led the team in tackles for losses, nine for 60 meters (66 yards), and was second in quarterback sacks with four. |
