GLASGOW, Scotland, APR 14 (AP) - Swedish striker Henrik Larsson has ruled himself out of this summer's European Championships after a setback to his recovery from a broken leg.
The 28-year-old Celtic striker appeared to be on course for Euro2000 after returning to training four months after breaking his leg against Lyon in a UEFA Cup game.
But he injured the leg again while playing for Celtic's backup team last month and that has slowed his recovery.
"I'll not play in the European Championships and although I'm disappointed at missing the tournament, I was always prepared for this," he told the Daily Record on Friday.
The news is a blow to the Swedish national team, which had asked Celtic to send Larsson home to complete his rehabilitation.
"Celtic didn't want me to go over there and I understand that because I'm under contract to them and they pay my wages," the striker said. "I don't have a problem with that and I have accepted their decision." |
