CHULA VISTA, APR 18 (AP) - Although their uniforms had no numbers on them, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and some of their teammates were identified easily.
Hamm and Chastain, who starred on the 1999 Women's World Cup championship team, were among 15 returning players who took part in Monday's opening practice of the Olympic residency camp for the U.S. women's national team. Joining them at the ARCO Olympic Training Center for the start of extended preparation for the Sydney Olympics were 15 others looking for spots on the final 18-member roster. The team will remain at the center before heading to the U.S. Women's Cup tournament starting May 5 in Portland, Oregon, then return for more training before defending the gold medal it won at the Atlanta Olympics. The United States won the World Cup in front of over 90,000 at a sold-out Rose Bowl. On Monday, there were about 50 onlookers. The
team, which has all 11 starters back from the World Cup final,
is 7-2-2 this year without extended team training. |
