April 20, 2000 CANBERRA, APR 19 (AP) - The world champion U.S. women's soccer team will travel to Australia three months before the Sydney Olympics to play in the Pacific Cup. Also scheduled for the eight-team tournament are China, the runner-up at the 1996 Olympics and the '99 World Cup to the Americans, host Australia, Canada, Scotland, Japan, New Zealand and North Korea. The U.S. team is in a group with Japan, Scotland and Australia and will begin play against the Japanese on May 31 in Canberra. The Americans will face Australia on June 2 in Sydney, then play Scotland on June 4, also in Sydney. The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals June 8 in Newcastle. The final also is in Newcastle on June 11. Scotland and the United States never have met in women's play. Considered a key tuneup for the Olympics in September, the Pacific Cup features six teams that participated in last year's World Cup. Also scheduled for June 3 is the draw for the Olympic tournament. Joining the Americans at the Olympics are Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Nigeria, Norway and Sweden. |
