25, 2000 RIO DE JANEIRO, APR 24 (AP) -- Soccer fans assaulted each other with rocks, sticks and bullets during a pre-game clash Sunday that left two people injured, media reported. The confrontation erupted while groups of fans of two traditionally rival teams, Flamengo and Vasco, were headed to the Maracana stadium for the afternoon game, police Sgt. Joao Lucas said. Shots were fired, and two people were taken to the hospital with an unspecified number gunshot wounds, media reported. No further information on their condition was available. Police were unable to confirm the injuries, but Lucas said about 2,500 police officers had been dispatched to patrol the area during the game, a decisive match in the first round of the Rio de Janeiro state championship. The two teams are renown for their passionate and often violent army of fans.
