April 25, 2000 HERSHEY, Pennsylvania, APR 24 (AP) - Hesler Phillips and Luis Ramirez each scored as Honduras posted a 2-0 victory over Canada in an Olympic soccer qualifying game Sunday. With the victory, Honduras (1-1) kept alive its hopes of advancing to the semifinal round of the six-team tournament, which will send its top two finishers to the Sydney Games. Canada (0-1), making its first appearance in the preliminary round, will play the United States on Tuesday night. The Americans blanked Honduras 3-0 on Friday and are in excellent shape for advancing to the final four. The Canadians must defeat the U.S. team and score at least three goals to move into Friday night's semifinal round. Otherwise, the Americans and Hondurans move on. Phillips gave Honduras a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when his shot from about 10 yards flicked off a Canadian defender and soared over goalkeeper Mike Franks. Canadian left fullback Jason Mathot was sent off for hitting Honduras' Elvis Danilo Turcios in the face with about 15 minutes remaining. Still, Canada had a great chance to tie the game in the 90th minute. But Kevin McKenna's header off Jim Brennan's free kick smacked the underside of the crossbar, dropped to the goal line and bounced away. Moments later, in stoppage time, Ramirez tacked on a goal to seal it for Honduras. . |
