28, 2000 SAO PAULO, APR 27 (AP) - Rivaldo scored twice as Brazil held on for an unimpressive 3-2 victory over Ecuador Wednesday night in the second round of 2002 World Cup qualifying play in Latin America. Ecuador stunned the Brazilian fans early in the first half when an injured Ageing scored in the 11th minute. The veteran striker took advantage of a sudden counterattack that found Brazilian goalie Ida a little too far out and fired a shot past three defenders to score. Rivaldo, FIFA's 1999 player of the year, scored the equalizer in the 18th minute, whipping around a ball lost by Edilson and firing it into the goal. Brazil then took the lead on a goal by Antonio Carlos who kicked in a header from Cesar Sampaio in the 43rd minute. In the second half, Rivaldo came through again for Brazil in the 51st minute. Rivaldo converted after the ball fell out of Ecuadorean goalie Cevallo's hands just after he saved a shot by Amoroso. Then, just when Brazil thought it could relax, De La Cruz scored for Ecuador in the 75th minute on a left-footed bomb from outside the area that ended up high in the corner of the goal, well beyond Dida's reach. Brazil was able to hold on to the lead but the crowd was not impressed and loudly voiced their disapproval. National team coach Wanderley Luxemburgo tried to put a positive spin on the booing. "The fans jeered at the end because they thought the score was too tight, but it ended up driving the team," he said following the game. With the win, Brazil now has four points in the World Cup qualifiers after tying with Colombia in the first round. Ecuador remained at three points after beating Venezuela in its first game.
