UNDATED (AP) - Rivaldo scored on a penalty kick in the 85th minute to give Brazil a 1-1 tie with visiting Uruguay on Wednesday night in a qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup.
Colombian referee Oscar Ruiz awarded Brazil the penalty kick after Uruguay's Coelho grabbed Guilherme's jersey and knocked him to the ground just as the Brazilian was about to score.
Uruguay's Dario Silva opened the scoring in the sixth minute. The game was played at Rio de Janeiro's Maracana Stadium on the 50th anniversary of Uruguay's stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil in the 1950 World Cup final at the massive structure.
Brazil (2-0-2) moved within a point of first-place Argentina (3-0-0) in the 10-country South American competition. Uruguay (2-1-1) is third, two points behind Argentina.
The top four teams will qualify for the 2002 World Cup and the fifth-place team will advance to a playoff against the Oceania champion.
In the other game Wednesday, Venezuela beat Bolivia 4-2 in San Cristobal for its first victory in the competition.
Miguel Mea Vitali, Ruberth Moran, Edson Tortolero and Giovanni Savarese scored for Venezuela. Jaime Moreno and Julio Cesar Baldivieso scored for Bolivia.
On Thursday, Argentina is at Colombia, Peru at Ecuador, and Paraguay at Chile.
