RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - What better than the world's most famous singer to help celebrate the world's most popular sport?
At least that is what producers of an upcoming movie about the history of soccer are counting on.
Pop star Madonna has sealed a contract with British producer Atlantic Eye to sing in the movie's soundtrack and help publicize it, O Estado de Sao Paulo newspaper reported Tuesday.
The film, which will feature acclaimed players and taped interviews with ordinary soccer fans throughout the world, is expected to hit movie theaters in March 2002, just before World Cup games kick off.
"She got very excited when she found out about the project," movie producer Sidnei Loureiro was quoted as saying. "She said she played soccer when she was a little girl."
Madonna will record versions in English of Caetano Veloso's "Alegria Alegria" and Giberto Gil's "Aquele Abraco."
It was unclear how much she would be paid. Atlantic Eye, partially owned by film wizard Steven Spielberg, will begin production of the dlrs 8.9-million movie in the coming days, the newspaper said. |
