DUBLIN (AP) - Ireland is considering a joint bid with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for the 2008 European Championship, the Football Association of Ireland said Tuesday. The possibility of a Celtic bid was examined over the weekend in Zurich, Switzerland, by the heads of the four associations. The FAI said Scotland was still interested in pursuing a lone bid but was also looking at collaborating. "Already we have sent a letter to the Scottish association on the matter and we would hope that in the coming months the attempts to stage these prestigious finals will strengthen and, perhaps, become a reality," FAI president Pat Quigley and cheif executive Bernard O'Byrne said in a statement. The recently completed 2000 championship was also organized jointly by the Netherlands and Belgium, the first time it was put together in that way. The 2004 championship will be in Portugal. Others interested for 2008 are joint bids by Hungary, Austria and Croatia and another joint bid from Denmark, Finland and Sweden. |
