Mohammedan earn narrow victory over Rahmatganj |

Dhaka (UNB)– Luck favored holders Mohammedan SC to earn a narrow 1-0 goal victory over Rahmatganj MFS in a keenly contested NBL Premier Division Football League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium here yesterday (Saturday). National medio Motiur Munna scored the face-saving goal for the popular black and white team just four minutes before the final whistle from a half chance amid thunderous cheers from some 4,000 fans at the big bowl. With the day’s hard-fought win, the traditional Mohammedan SC topped the league table securing full nine points from three engagements. Earlier, they beat Dhanmondi Club 5-0 and Victoria by 3-1 goals. Mohammedan SC beat Rahmatganj also by 1-0 goal in the season’s curtain raiser Federation Cup Football tournament last month. In the day’s crucial match at the water soaked muddy ground, both the teams played equally with attacks and counter attacks and spoiled a series of easy opportunity. In the 32rd minute, Rahmatganj defender Din Mohammad saved his castle foiling a spectacular side volley of Alfaz from goal line. A close header of Alfaz narrowly missed the target off a right wing cross of Shoeb in the 38th minute. In the beginning of the second half, Rahmatganj made a series of attacks one after another booking Mohammedan SC in their territory. In the 48th minute, Milan sent the ball wide from vantage position while a left wing shot of skipper Moni returned to play hitting the side bar in the 49th minute. Two minutes later, Tipu of Rahmatganj failed to push the ball properly off Milan center. In the 53rd minute, a power-packed shot by Mohammedan skipper Alfaz returned to play kissing the cross bar. Rahmatganj substitute player Jalal failed to connect a ball from goalmouth off an Anwar right wing lob in the 85th minute while Rahmatganj captain Moni also failed to push a ball in the following minute. As the match was heading for a draw in the stipulated 90-minute, Motiur Munna scored the match winner for Mohammedan by a well-measured shot from a goalmouth melee. Munna fired at the top of the net when a right wing lob of Rezaul came his way deflecting custodian Milan by a Naquib header. Rahmatganj custodian Milan displayed a brilliant performance during the match to foil some good Mohammedan attempts before the danger.
