Barisal, May 5 (UNB) - Diarrhea, a waterborne disease, claimed 164 lives in Barisal division last year. Health officials said some 1,687 people died of the disease in six districts of the division in last seven years. Of the deaths, 1,021 were reported in 1993, 118 in 1994, 100 in 1995, 108 in 1996, 99 in 1997, 92 in 1998. A total of 508 deaths were reported from Jhalakati district alone during the period. In last four months of the current year, diarrhea claimed four lives and affected 7,000 others in the division. Although diarrhea breaks out in an epidemic form every year in the region, nothing enough is being done to fight the disease, according to locals. They said it’s quite impossible for 2,299 health workers and a few medical teams to combat the outbreak of diarrhea in 335 unions of the six districts. The only or-saline plant of the district, they said, has been grappled with numerous problems, including lack of manpower and nonpayment of salaries. Besides, the government commitment to set up a Diarrheal Research Center here seems to have been put in shelf. Despite having all facilities, Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital does not treat diarrheal patients. Instead, it refers such patients to Sadar Hospital, official sources said.
