     June 2, 2000    Dhaka,
June 1 (UNB) – A parliamentary committee was formed today to investigate
alleged negligence in treatment of late MP Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and recommend
punitive measures against the responsible physicians.    The
probe body will begin its function on Saturday. It has been asked to submit
inquiry report within seven days, an announcement from the parliament
    secretariat said today (Thursday).   “We
will start our activities from Saturday as the director of the National
Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital is not in Dhaka now,”
Alhaj Tajul Islam Chowdhury MP told UNB soon after he was named its convenor.   Two
other members of the subcommittee formed by the Parliamentary Standing
Committee on Health and Family Welfare Ministry are Begum Aleya Afroz MP and
Dr Ziaul Haq Mollah MP.    “I
already have asked concerned officials to gather all the published press
reports on the allegation of neglect in treatment of a parliamentarian. The
reports will be basis of our investigation,” the inquiry committee chief
    said.   Dr
Kazi Abu Yusuf, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the
concerned ministry, who formed the committee, told UNB that he would send
the findings of the inquiry to the Speaker along with recommendations for
    action.   Earlier
on Wednesday, Speaker Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury in a letter to Dr Abu Yusuf
directed inquiry into alleged neglect in treatment of the late MP Bhutto and
punitive action against those responsible.   The
Speaker asked for inquiry and action following press reports that Bhutto was
not properly taken care of and given appropriate treatment at the Institute
for Cardiovascular Diseases and Hospital and also at the clinic where he had
    minor operation earlier.   But
Bhutto’s party colleagues, who apprehend his premature death to be clouded
in mystery, are not happy with only a parliamentary inquiry. They still are
demanding a full-fledged administrative investigation into the
    “negligence” in treatment.   “The
parliamentary committee can only make recommendations. Parliament is not the
government. We want to see administrative investigation. And before that,
Prof AKM Mohibullah of the hospital should be suspended,” Monirul Haq
Chowdhury of Jatiya Party (M-M) told UNB.   Terming
the clinic “Comfort” as “Discomfort” where Zulfikar Ali Bhutto MP
had a minor piles operation on Saturday, Chowdhury said investigation should
also be carried out against the Health Ministry- approved clinic.   He
said Bhutto had been sweating since Sunday night at the clinic, but was
taken to the Cardiovascular Hospital on Monday afternoon where he died of a
second heart attack following negligence of physicians, especially of the
CCU chief who didn’t visit the MP at all.
