Dhamrai (Dhaka) (UNB)- World-renowned supermodel Claudia Schiffer kicked off her global mission on immunization of children of deadly diseases from Bangladesh on two grounds. Schiffer said she gave this country top priority as she never visited here as well as heard about “bad luck” of Bangladesh. The German model girl, who is acting as special representative of US Fund for UNICEF, however, was satisfied to see the performance of EPI here, particularly polio immunization program. She arrived here Sunday for a five-day visit to observe ongoing polio eradication and immunization drives, among other initiatives. As part of her schedule, she undertook a trip to a remote immunization center at Char Doutia of Sombhag union of Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka district this (Monday) morning. The model-turned missionary administered two drops of oral polio vaccine to three baby boys under six months at the immunization center at the house of Mohammad Ainul Huq, a paramedic. Later, the UNICEF special representative spent some time sitting beside some mothers bearing their children in their laps and caressed the babies. Staying about 20 minutes at the remote immunization center, Schiffer returned to Dhaka. Local upazila health and family-planning officer Dr Abul Hasnat briefed her about the routine immunization program of the upazila and the center, and their activities. Later talking to newsmen, Claudia Schiffer said: “I am very much satisfied about the performance of immunization. A lot of people have been explaining the importance of getting vaccination. The way immunization program is going successfully, particularly in the case of polio, is good.” Asked about her message for the people of Bangladesh, she said: “My message is that I am trying to mediate raising more awareness so everybody gets vaccinated.” She suggested that there would be national immunization day where everybody would come up the same day for immunization “so that we can eradicate polio from the world.” Replying to a query she said her mission is going on and the goal is that by 2005 there can be an announcement that polio is fully eradicated from the world. She would visit hill district Bandarban today (Tuesday). June Kunugi and Dr Tamanna Taher of UNICEF, among others, accompanied Claudia Schiffer on the field trip. |
