Hospital's foundation laid by Prime Minister |

Gopalganj (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday (Saturday) laid the foundation of a 250-bed General Hospital here with a vow to reach the medical facilities to the doorsteps of rural people. The five-storied building of the hospital at an estimated cost of Tk 18.08 crore will upgrade the existing 50-bed hospital. The entire expenditure will be met by the government from domestic resources. The Prime Minister said the present government was working relentlessly to fulfil the basic needs of people, including health care services. She said the government has taken steps for food security, including disbursing agriculture loans and other inputs for raising production. That is why the country got a record harvest of 2.50 crore metric tons of food grains achieving food autarky for the first time, she said. "Work on 18,500 community health centres is progressing fast to facilitate the common people," Sheikh Hasina said adding, "plan has been taken to construct health complex in each upazila and a sub-center in each union". Each health complex will be developed to provide medical facilities to 6,000 people, the Prime Minister said. Pointing to present condition of medical education, she said the government attached importance and gave the highest allocation to the health and education sector in the budget for the current fiscal year. Referring to a recent disclosure of World Health Organisation (WHO) that said Bangladesh stood 88th position out of 191 countries in the health sector while second in the SAARC countries, she said, "it is a big success for us". Health Minister Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Pourasashava Chairman and district Awami League president Mohammad Ali Abu Mia also spoke on the occasion. |
