Drug abuse high among the activists of student politics |

Dhaka (UNB) - Amid an increasing trend of Phensidyl addiction, a survey has found that some 7.46 percent male and 1.79 percent female students of higher educational institutions abuse it in Dhaka city. The survey was carried out among residential students of colleges and universities by LIFE, a UN affiliated Anti- Drug organisation, recently. One of the alarming findings of the study is high prevalence of drug abuse among the activists of student politics. Some 27.43 percent of the drug abusers are involved in student politics,” said Dr Abul Hasnat Milton, one of the researchers. Tobacco was found to be the most commonly used substance when male percentage is 55.22 while female 7.69 in this population. After tobacco the most commonly abused drug is alcohol and its percentage is 13.73 for males and 3.07 for females. Some 465 students were interviewed in this study. Out of them, 336 were male and 130 female students. Students aged between 20 and 23 were found to be more involved in substance abuse, said Kamrul Islam Sony, chairman, Life, quoting the study report. |
