Dhaka (UNB) – A non-government organization has set up a laboratory for detection of pollutants in water. “Some 26 parameters of water quality including arsenic will be tested in the laboratory, set up by NGO Forum, at a cheaper price,” said its director MA Rashidat a press briefing here yesterday. The NGO Forum that works for drinking water supply and sanitation said nearly 30 percent of the hand-pumps are affected by arsenic contamination. About 20 percent of handpumps sunk by NGOs are also affected by it. Providing alternative source of water to the handpump users is a gigantic task for “behavioural change” of millions of people, said officials of the Forum. They said apart from arsenic crisis, Bangladesh drinking water supply is also seriously affected by declining water table in north and north-central, salinity in the south and iron in the north-east and south-west regions. Arsenic specialist Dr Abul Hasnat Milton, chemist Tofizur Rahman and Danish sociologist Jorgen Billetoff also spoke on the occasion. |
