Dhaka (UNB) – South East Asia (SEA) has a shortfall of 8 million units of blood against the annual requirement of the region. Out of the total 75 million units collected globally, only 7 million units are collected from South East Asia region. This was disclosed on the concluding day of a five-day workshop on “Strategies for Blood Donor Recruitment” organised by WHO in the city. The workshop was organised to assist the national blood programmes in SEA region. It observed that risk of transmission of infections such as hepatitis and HIV is far greater when blood from paid or replacement donor is used for transfusion as compared to voluntary donors. The workshop reiterated the need to step up voluntary blood donation through motivation and recruitment of blood donors by involving community as a whole. Twenty representatives from various member countries in SEA region participated in the workshop that began on September 24. |
