SEOUL, OCT 13 (AP) - The U.N. high commissioner for refugees, Sadako Ogata, received this year's Seoul Peace Prize in a ceremony in Seoul Friday.

"We at UNHCR take it as a welcome and valuable recognition of our work of 50 years with refugees and other uprooted people," Ogata said after receiving the award at a Seoul hotel.

Ogata, a Japanese, was the fifth recipient of the biennial prize set up in 1990 to commemorate the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Past recipients include U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, International Olympic Committee President Juan Antonio Samaranch, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and the international relief organization, Doctors Without Borders.

Before receiving the award, Ogata paid a courtesy call on President Kim Dae-jung. Later in the day, Kim was announced as the winner of this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

Ogata was elected the U.N. high commissioner for refugees in 1991 and has since worked to ease the sufferings of 27 million refugees around the world.
