KIRYAT SHEMONA (AP) - A gunman trying to infiltrate Israel's northern border with Lebanon died in an exchange of fire along the frontier, the Israeli army said Saturday. Two other gunmen were injured on the Lebanese side of the border during the clash Friday night west of the disputed Chebaa farms area. The gunman was shot dead after "the army discovered and derailed an infiltration attempt ... along the border between Israel and Lebanon," the Israeli army said in a statement. "The army patrol that arrived on the scene was fired at from Lebanese territory," the statement said. "The troops returned fire with light weapons, grenades, anti-tank missiles. Helicopter gunships were also brought into the area and fired." No Israeli soldiers were injured. The army found three weapons near the body of the dead man, the statement added. Lebanese military officials confirmed that Israeli helicopters and mortars opened fire along the border. The Israeli army closed roads in the border area and sealed communities. Chebaa farms, a disputed enclave claimed by both Israel and Lebanon, has been tense since Hezbollah guerrillas stormed across the fence and captured three Israeli soldiers on Oct. 7. |
