TOKYO, OCT 6 (AP) - Japan praised Yugoslavia's people on Friday for struggling for democracy in their country and urged President Slobodan Milosevic to step down. As Milosevic's government appeared to collapse Friday during widespread pro-democracy protests in Belgrade, Japan said the ruler should "accept the peoples' will." Speaking for Japan's government, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hidenao Nakagawa said, "It seems now that many people want to put an end to his regime." Nakagawa also praised opposition leader Vojislav Kostunica, whose apparent victory in a recent election against Milosevic set off the popular revolt. "We pay our respects to the people of Yugoslavia who want democratic change and expect that democracy will be realized soon under Mr. Kostunica's leadership," said Nakagawa.
