PLAINS, Georgia--(AP) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter dedicated his rural boyhood home as a national historic site, recalling how his values came from his black neighbors. Carter said Friday the simple, white frame home, built in 1922, was owned by his family from 1928 until 1948. He said all his childhood friends and neighbors were black and he often spent the night with a black family, sleeping on the floor on a pallet filled with corn shucks. "Those were the days when the races were shaped in their relationship by a Supreme Court ruling that was called separate but equal," he said, noting that blacks had inferior schools, could not vote and could not serve on juries. "There was no equality at all ... It's embarrassing now to look back on those days." Carter, who worked closely with the Park Service on the restoration, said seeing the farm as he knew it as a child was an emotional experience. "It's exactly the way it was ... before we got the windmill and running water in the house," he said. --- NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) - It's the swan song for a backstage fixture at the Grand Ole Opry. Jerry Strobel, 60, will leave his longtime position as manager at the end of the year because the company that owns the Opry is cutting costs. "It's been a good run and a lot of fun, and I wish only the very best for the Grand Ole Opry," said Strobel, who has worked at the Opry for 30 years. The Gaylord company last month reported a loss in earnings for the third quarter and said losses for the fiscal year will be steeper than expected. --- LOS ANGELES (AP) - The on-again, off-again marriage between Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage and actress Patricia Arquette is apparently off again. Arquette has filed for divorce from Cage citing "irreconcilable differences" in a petition filed Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court. Cage had filed for divorce in February, but the couple reconciled and the petition was withdrawn. Arquette's divorce petition stated that the couple separated again Nov. 1. The two married in April 1995 and separated nine months later, according to documents from Cage's first divorce petition. They have already dissolved their assets and debts by written agreements, court documents said. Cage, who is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, won a best actor Oscar in 1995 for his role as an alcoholic in "Leaving Las Vegas." Arquette, the sister of actors David and Rosanna Arquette, is perhaps best known for her role as a possessed woman in last year's horror film "Stigmata." The couple appeared together last year in the Martin Scorsese ambulance drama "Bringing Out the Dead." |
