DES MOINES-- (UNB/AP) - State leaders officially certified election results in the state of Iowa on Monday, declaring Democrat Al Gore the winner of the state's seven electoral votes by a margin of 4,144 votes over Republican George W. Bush. The results were approved unanimously by the State Board of Canvass, which includes Gov. Tom Vilsack, Secretary of State Chet Culver, Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge and State Treasurer Michael Fitzgerald - all Democrats. Auditor Richard Johnson is the only Republican on the board. With 1.32 million voters, Iowa had its second-largest voter turnout ever. It exceeded 1996 totals by about 80,000 votes. The state had a record turnout in 1992 with 1.37 million votes cast, or about 80 percent of registered voters. The canvass set Iowa's seven electors to the Electoral College. State elections director Sandy Steinbach the final tally was different from earlier reports because of minor tabulating errors found by county auditors. Iowa Republicans had considered a recount of the state's presidential but Bush chose not to seek a recount. |
