BEIRUT-- (UNB/AP) - A military court sentenced six former pro-Israeli militiamen to death in absentia on Saturday for collaborating with Israel during its ±àv¹m² occupation of southern Lebanon. The six men - condemned to death for their "connection with the killing of a man named Mohammed al-Dabet" - were among 42 Lebanese citizens whose trial before a special military court began late Friday. A seventh suspect was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment and the verdicts against the others ranged from 10 days to five years in prison, with some being fined up to 500,000 Lebanese pounds (dlrs 333). Lebanon is technically at war with Israel and prohibits any contact with the Jewish state. Since June, at least 1,600 people have been tried and received prison sentences of up to 20 years for collaborating with Israel, killing Lebanese guerrillas or illegally entering Israel during its 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon. At least 10 have been sentenced to death, all in absentia. About 2,200 members of the now-defunct South Lebanon Army, which once numbered 2,500 fighters, surrendered to Lebanese authorities or were captured after Israel withdrew in May. Hundreds of others fled to Israel with their families. |
