JERUSALEM-- (UNB/AP) - A Jordanian citizen has been arrested in connection with a bus bombing Dec. 28 in Tel Aviv that injured 14 people, Israeli security sources disclosed Sunday. The sources said the man - identified as Abdullah Abu Jabr, a 25-year-old restaurant worker - was recruited by the Tanzim militia movement, which is affiliated with Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction. The arrest came the same day as the bombing, but was kept under wraps until now. A senior security source said the assailant was given the bomb by his handlers in the northern West Bank city of Nablus. He traveled to the Israeli coastal city of Netanya, then boarded a public bus for Tel Aviv, the source said. Once in Tel Aviv, the bomber picked a bus at random - the No. 51, headed north toward the suburb of Petah Tikvah. After disembarking, he activated the bomb by cellular phone, the security source said. The man, who worked as the night guard at a restaurant in Rishon, south of Tel Aviv, was arrested later that day, the source said. He did not tell authorities his motives, but he came from a family of Palestinian refugees, according to the security source. The fate of millions of Palestinian refugees is a key sticking point in U.S. peace proposals being weighed by both sides. |
