VANDALIA, APR 11 (AP) - Al Gore said that Elian Gonzalez's relatives should be allowed to work out for themselves who should have custody of the 6-year-old Cuban boy.
"With tensions as high as high as they are and with both sides trying to figure out a way to come to a resolution, I think that we need to encourage the talks between the family members themselves. That's the ideal solution," the vice president told about 250 people at a town meeting Monday.

"Let the entire family, including the Florida relatives, talk with one another without people from the U.S. government or the Cuban government or lawyers on either side," he said in response to a question during the two-hour meeting at Vandalia-Butler High School.
Last month, Gore urged Congress to grant permanent resident status to Elian, his father and other relatives in Cuba "so that the case can be adjudicated properly." Gore has said that family court should determine whether Elian stays in Florida with relatives or returns to Cuba with his father.
Elian's father arrived in the United States last week to seek custody of his son, and Justice Department and the Immigration and Naturalization Service officials are negotiating with the relatives in Miami on how best to reunite the father and son.
Gore also criticized Republican rival George W. Bush for pushing a $ 1.2 trillion "tax scheme" that would exceed projected budget surpluses by $ 1 trillion.
"I believe what Governor Bush has proposed is not a responsible proposal," said Gore, the presumed Democratic presidential nominee.
On Tuesday, Ohioans were getting a double dose of presidential campaigning.
