WASHINGTON, APR 15 (AP) - George W. Bush has broken the dlrs 80 million mark in his Republican presidential campaign, adding to his own fund-raising record while replenishing his war chest after an expensive primary effort.
The campaign raised around dlrs 7 million between March 1 and April 6, spokesman Scott McClellan said Friday, three-quarters of the goal of dlrs 10 million by the end of April. Bush's total for the campaign is now more than dlrs 81 million.
The campaign expects to raise an additional dlrs 550,000 next week with events in North Carolina and Michigan.
It also has stepped up its online fund raising, sending solicitations via e-mail. Through March 31, the campaign had raised dlrs 1.6 million online.
Even after reaching the dlrs 10 million goal, Bush campaign officials said they would continue to raise money.
Heavy primary spending to defeat Arizona Sen. John McCain had depleted the Texas governor's dlrs 70 million. The campaign spent a record dlrs 63.3 million through Feb. 29, leaving Bush with about dlrs 7.5 million in the bank.
The apparent Democratic presidential nominee, vice president Al Gore, had around dlrs 10 million to spend as of the end of February.
Both Bush and Gore are next scheduled to report their fund-raising figures to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday.
Bush is not accepting taxpayer funds for his campaign and therefore can spend as much as he can raise.
Gore is receiving federal funds, so he can spend no more than dlrs 40.5 million, plus legal and accounting expenses.
Both candidates will accept federal funding for the general election, meaning they cannot raise additional money for their campaigns after this summer's nominating conventions. Bush and Gore will collect dlrs 67.6 million each in federal money after becoming their parties' standardbearers.
