ROME, APR 20 (AP) - Emboldened by gains in local races and eager to parlay those victories into national power, Italy's conservative opposition is pushing for early elections now that Premier Massimo D'Alema has quit.
The decision belongs to President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who accepted D'Alema's resignation Wednesday.
Ciampi, however, has said he wants a May 21 referendum on changing the electoral system. Since a national election would block the referendum, Ciampi is expected to search instead for a new premier.
The president began two days of consultations Thursday with Italy's political leaders, meeting with the heads of Parliament and ormer President Francesco Cossiga.
