MOSCOW, APR 20 (AP) - Russia's foreign policy goals in Asia include seeking closer ties with ASEAN and helping to improve relations between China and India, a senior official said Thursday.
Sergei Ivanov, secretary of the Russian Security Council, said better relations between India and China would boost regional stability, trade and other forms of regional cooperation, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.
"We would like to assist in every possible way the settlement of the contradictions between New Delhi and Beijing," Ivanov was quoted as telling the 11th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific news agencies.
Moscow has close ties with New Delhi and its relations with Beijing have improved in recent years.
In stressing Russia's hopes for closer ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Ivanov said Moscow put special importance on the role of Indonesia and Malaysia, describing them as "root" members of the regional grouping, the report said.
