Singapore to open broadband network to greater competition |

SINGAPORE, APR 5 (AP) - Singapore will open its broadband network to greater competition in an effort to turn the city-state into a regional multimedia center, a Cabinet minister announced Wednesday.
Currently, only government-linked Singapore Telecommunications and Singapore Cable Vision offer broadband services, a high-speed method of delivering cable television, Internet access and interactive television.
The move to open the broadband market follows a sweeping liberalization of the telecommunications sector announced in January, followed last week by the awarding of dozens of new licenses for telecom service providers.
"The government is committed to creating a multiplayer, competitive environment" in broadband services, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Yeo Cheow Tong said.
The move is aimed at making broadband services more cost effective for developers and consumers, Yeo said.
"One policy change is the open interconnect access to SingTel's and SCV's broadband infrastructures so that other players can come in to offer broadband services as well," Yeo said.
The minister was speaking at the opening of Comdex Asia, a two-day annual communications and information technology event where companies showcase their latest products.
