TOKYO, MAY 13 (AP) - Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori said Saturday that parliamentary elections will likely be held June 25.
The next election, which must be held by October, will be a critical test for Mori, who replaced Keizo Obuchi when he collapsed in a coma last month.
When asked about the June 25 date for lower house elections, Mori said in an interview on the quasi-public NHK TV that the "flow is unlikely to change."
The election will also be a gauge for the popularity of the coalition government, which includes Mori's Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito and the New Conservative parties.
The Liberal Democrats don't have a majority in the upper house of Parliament and needs the coalition to get key bills passed.
