JERUSALEM, MAY 18 (UNB/AP) - An Israeli general threatened to bomb Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's headquarters in the West Bank town of Ramallah after Palestinians fired shots near his own headquarters during violent clashes earlier this week, a Palestinian official said Thursday.
Two Israeli Cabinet ministers condemned the general's reported statement and said it did not reflect the policy of the government.
Brig. Gen. Shlomo Oren, commander of Israeli forces in the West Bank, made the threat Monday at a late-night meeting with Gen. Haj. Ismail, commander of the Palestinian security forces, according to senior Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat.
The meeting was aimed at calming tempers and bringing daylong riots to an end, but the Palestinian side walked out in protest over Oren's threat, Erekat said.
"We have submitted an official complaint to the prime minister's office about the threat, and we asked Prime Minister Ehud Barak to prosecute him," Erekat said.
