RIYADH, JUNE 10 (AP) - Two Saudi men convicted of murder and rape were beheaded in Saudi Arabia Saturday, an Interior Ministry statement said.
Saad bin Abdullah al-Zahrani was executed in the western city of Baha for fatally shooting Rashash bin Ahmed al-Zahrani after an argument, said a ministry statement that gave no other details. It did not say if the two were related.
Saeed bin Salem bin Saeed was executed in the holy city of Mecca for kidnapping and raping an unidentified girl. He was also found guilty of committing a number of thefts, drinking alcohol and taking drugs, said the statement.
Saturday's executions brings to 52 the number of people beheaded in Saudi Arabia this year. At least 99 were executed in the kingdom last year.
Punishment in Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islamic law and mandates executions for murder, rape, drug trafficking and armed robbery. Executions are carried out with a sword in a public square. Human rights organizations have condemned the high rate of executions, saying Islam prescribes using the punishments sparingly.
